Viennese coffee culture brings people together: NABER Kaffee Manufaktur, Schönberger’s Kaffeegreißler and Beans & Machines

Tradition, quality and a vibrant coffee culture in Vienna

For generations, NABER Kaffee Manufaktur has stood for Austrian coffee tradition, the very highest quality and an unmistakable flavour. It is particularly gratifying when these values are upheld by long-standing partners and innovative companies, leading to collaborations that keep Viennese coffee culture alive and help it to evolve.

NABER Kaffee Manufaktur has a long-standing partnership with Schönberger’s Kaffeegreißler and Beans & Machines, which demonstrates how tradition, craftsmanship and modern coffee expertise can be successfully combined.

Schönberger’s Coffee Shop: Coffee-house charm steeped in history

A prime example of this is our long-standing partnership with Schönbergers Kaffeegreißler in Vienna. This historic coffee house combines authentic Viennese coffee house culture with a range of high-quality coffees and a passion for indulgence that perfectly aligns with the values of NABER Kaffee Manufaktur.

Anyone wishing to experience the special charm of Viennese coffee house history will find a slice of living tradition at Schönbergers. At Wiedner Hauptstraße 40 in Vienna’s 4th district – one of NABER’s former premises – guests can enjoy the atmosphere of bygone decades whilst discovering a selection of NABER coffee specialities.

The unique Greißler concept: experience Viennese coffee history for yourself

What sets Schönberger apart from many modern coffee bars is its unique ‘Greißler’ concept. The term refers to a traditional local shop specialising in coffee and coffee accessories, with roots stretching directly back to the history of the NABER Kaffee Manufaktur.

Shortly after the Second World War, Friedrich Naber, son of the company’s founder, developed an innovative shop concept in collaboration with the post-war architect Ernst Otto Hofmann. The idea was as simple as it was visionary: the then-emerging espresso bar was combined with a specialist shop for coffee and accessories. The model for this was the NABER coffee shop, which opened in 1908 on Laudongasse in Vienna’s 8th district.

This gave rise to one of Vienna’s first coffee shop chains. Customers could purchase high-quality coffee beans and accessories whilst enjoying a quick espresso – an idea that was far ahead of its time.

Schönbergers remains committed to this tradition to this day. The aim remains unchanged: to create the finest quality coffee anew every day and to offer coffee lovers everything they need for the perfect coffee experience. All team members are trained baristas and are happy to advise on roasts, brewing methods, coffee machines, grinders and any necessary repairs.

Heritage conservation meets modern coffee culture

Another special feature is the listed interior of the espresso bar. The original furnishings immediately transport visitors into the atmosphere of a typical 1950s coffee and delicatessen shop.

Behind the historic façade, however, state-of-the-art technology is at work. Whether it’s espresso, filter coffee, cold brew or a summery affogato al caffè – traditional Viennese coffee house culture meets contemporary barista art here. This combination of historic ambience and modern coffee preparation makes Schönbergers a special place for all coffee enthusiasts.

Try, taste and discover

Coffee is meant to be experienced. That’s why Schönbergers always has two or three freshly roasted varieties available for tasting. On request, various brewing methods such as filter coffee, cold brew or E.S.E. pod coffee are served, allowing guests to discover different flavour profiles.

Naturally, every coffee speciality is prepared entirely to suit personal taste – from classic espresso through to macchiato, corretto, cappuccino and caffè latte, right through to affogato.

Particular attention is paid to the preparation: the coffee is always extracted in a double portion to bring out the flavours to their fullest. Milk-based coffees are served as flat whites or so-called ‘dry cappuccinos’ – with freshly prepared, fine-textured milk foam that impresses with its natural sweetness and velvety consistency.

In this way, Schönberger combines Vienna’s renowned coffee tradition with modern barista craftsmanship. Every cup becomes a special treat.

Beans & Machines: Expertise in coffee and professional coffee machines for offices, medical practices and the catering industry

As well as running the listed Kaffeegreissler branch, the Schönberger family also operates a ‘business’ division specialising in professional coffee machines. The company serves office clients and medical practices and is the go-to supplier for high-quality coffee machines, coffee accessories and selected coffee specialities. It is particularly pleasing that NABER Kaffee Manufaktur has been an integral part of the Beans & Machines range for many years.

Working together for Vienna’s coffee culture

The partnerships with Schönberger’s Kaffeegreißler and Beans & Machines highlight just how vibrant Viennese coffee culture is today. Different companies, shared values: quality, craftsmanship, tradition and a passion for good coffee.

Together, they help not only to preserve Viennese coffee culture but also to develop it in a contemporary way – from heritage-listed coffee shops to modern barista concepts and professional coffee solutions for businesses and the hospitality industry.

NABER Kaffee Manufaktur would like to thank its long-standing partners for their trust and looks forward to continuing to set new trends for Austrian coffee and culinary culture together in the future.
